Alexandros Koumbis

Head of the Compounds Collection Division and Medicinal Chemistry Expert

Alexandros Ε. Koumbis was born in Thessaloniki Greece. He received his Chemistry B.Sc. (1990) and his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry (1996) from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He worked as a post-doctoral researcher in the laboratory of Prof. K. C. Nicolaou at the Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla, USA (1998-2001) and he was a visiting professor in the laboratory of Prof. Jean-Marie Lehn at the Institut de Science et d'Ingénierie Supramoléculaires, University Louis Pasteur, Strasbourg, France (2007-2008).

In 2001 he was appointed Lecturer at the Chemistry Department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and throughout the years he has been gradually promoted to Full Professor (2017). His main research interests include the designing and synthesis of biologically active compounds, the synthesis of natural products and the investigation and development of novel synthetic methodologies. His work emphasizes in the fields of carbohydrate derivatives and inositols, modified nucleosides and heterocycles. His group will furnish the HSMC with diverse libraries of these compounds classes.
